Corrections deputies are sworn law enforcement professionals responsible for the care, custody, and control of every person held in the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar — roughly 2,540 people at the main facility.

Their job goes far beyond 'guarding.' On any shift a deputy may de-escalate a mental health crisis, perform CPR, break up a fight, escort detainees to court, screen mail for contraband, supervise meals and recreation, and document everything for the courts.

Most people in the county jail are pre-trial — meaning they have been accused, not convicted. Deputies protect their constitutional rights while keeping staff, detainees, and visitors safe. It is one of the most demanding and least understood jobs in public safety.
