Empowering union women since 1974. Organizing the unorganized, advancing affirmative action, building political power, and increasing women’s leadership at every level.
The Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), founded in 1974, is the only national organization for union women in the United States — and the most influential voice of working women within the U.S. labor movement.
CLUW grew out of a March 23-24, 1974 founding convention in Chicago that brought together more than 3,200 women from 58 international and national unions. Retired UAW Vice President Olga Madar was elected the first National President. From day one, CLUW set its four founding goals: organize the unorganized, promote affirmative action, advance political action & legislation, and increase women’s participation in unions.
50+ years later, CLUW is led by National President Sylvia J. Ramos (CWA Chief of Staff), elected at the 23rd Biennial Convention in November 2025 — continuing the mission of the women who built it.
