A Brief History of Labor Unions in America

The American labor movement has a rich and powerful history that has shaped the workplace rights we enjoy today.

Early Beginnings (1800s)

The first labor unions emerged in the early 1800s as workers in skilled trades organized to protect their wages and working conditions. The industrial revolution brought dangerous factory conditions, long hours, and child labor.

The Rise of Major Unions (1880s-1930s)

  • 1886:The American Federation of Labor (AFL) was founded
  • 1935:The Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) organized industrial workers
  • 1935:The National Labor Relations Act gave workers the legal right to organize

  • Major Achievements

Thanks to union organizing, American workers won:

  • The 40-hour work week
  • Minimum wage laws
  • Workplace safety regulations
  • Child labor laws
  • Social Security
  • Unemployment insurance

  • The Modern Era

While union membership has declined since its peak in the 1950s, unions continue to fight for workers' rights. Recent years have seen renewed organizing efforts in:

  • Tech companies
  • Amazon warehouses
  • Starbucks stores
  • Healthcare facilities

  • Continuing the Legacy

Today's workers stand on the shoulders of those who fought for fair treatment. The labor movement continues to evolve and address new challenges in the modern economy.
