More Than a School
For nearly two decades, Lincoln School was the center of education, culture, leadership, athletics, and community life for African Americans in Lake County during segregation. It produced teachers, military veterans, ministers, business owners, civic leaders, and public servants. Built in 1949 on land donated by Black citizens — with lumber donated by W. C. Haynes Jr. — Lincoln stood at College and McBride Streets in the Baptistville community as a monument to what a determined community can build.
Today, the surviving brick building at 327 College Street is one of the last physical reminders of Lincoln School's legacy. The Lincoln Alumni Association is working to preserve it as a multipurpose community resource center serving all of Lake County.
