Our mission is to advocate for the professional, educational, economic, and social welfare of our members; to ensure their fair and equal treatment; and to continually seek opportunities to strengthen the bond between officers and the communities they serve.
Our ultimate responsibility is to protect, defend, and oversee the fair and equitable implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City of Memphis and the Memphis Police Association. This agreement ensures harmonious relations between the City and Association and provides for the equitable and peaceful adjustment of differences related to wages, hours, and other conditions of employment.
The Memphis Police Association represents over 2,000 commissioned police officers and retirees of the Memphis Police Department. From patrol officers and detectives to specialized units and retired veterans, the MPA is the unified voice for law enforcement professionals across the City of Memphis.
Since 1973, the MPA has fought for competitive pay, adequate staffing, proper equipment, healthcare benefits, retirement security, and safe working conditions. When officers face disciplinary proceedings, contract disputes, or legislative threats, the MPA provides legal counsel and representation to ensure every member is treated fairly.
The Memphis Police Department is one of the busiest departments in the region, yet has historically been among the lowest paid in Shelby County. The MPA has consistently fought to close this pay gap, advocating for competitive salaries that reflect the danger, stress, and sacrifice officers face every day on Memphis streets.
Through MOU negotiations, legislative advocacy in Nashville, and public awareness campaigns, the MPA works to ensure that the men and women who put on the badge every day are compensated fairly and treated with the respect they deserve.
The MPA believes that strong police-community relationships are essential to public safety. Through outreach programs, the MPA Show podcast, and community engagement events, the association works to bridge the gap between officers and the neighborhoods they serve.
The MPA also advocates for legislative action at the state and federal level on issues that affect law enforcement professionals — from residency requirements to use-of-force policies to retirement benefits. When laws are being written that affect Memphis officers, the MPA is at the table.
"Our mission is to advocate for the professional, educational, economic, and social welfare of our members — and to continually seek opportunities to strengthen the bond between officers and the communities they serve."
