LABOR LEGEND · 40+ YEARS IN THE MOVEMENT

Gail Tyree

Former Executive Director of AFSCME Local 1733 — the union of the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strikers — now organizing with CWA International and CWA Local 3866. Four decades of standing with workers, service on numerous boards, and many awards for leadership, service, and excellence. And still on the line.

Gail Tyree
Big Sister of the Movement

"Gail has been my big sister in this labor movement. When I was finding my footing, she had already walked the road — and she made sure I never walked it alone. Forty years of her life given to working people. That's not a career. That's a calling."

— Kevin Bradshaw, President, Memphis CLC · Founder of Labor Education

Alongside her sister in the struggle, Rose Turner of UFCW 1529.

Four Decades on the Line
From the house that 1968 built to the newest unions in Memphis.
  1. 40+ Years Strong
A lifetime given to working people
More than four decades in the labor movement — organizing, negotiating, training, and mentoring across Memphis and the South. A living bridge between the generation of 1968 and the organizers of tomorrow.
  2. 2018 – 2022
    Executive Director, AFSCME Local 1733
Led the most historic local in America — the union of the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strikers. Fought for city employees through the pandemic, demanding the raises essential workers had earned: “To not compensate them for their sacrifices is unacceptable.”
  3. The Picket Lines
    Wherever workers stood, she stood
From AFSCME halls to the 2021 Kellogg's strike line with BCTGM 252G — standing beside Rev. Cleo Smith, one of the original 1968 strikers, and AFSCME International President Lee Saunders.
  4. 2023 – Present
CWA International & CWA Local 3866
Now organizing with the Communications Workers of America — bringing 40 years of Southern organizing wisdom to new industries, from tech workers to booksellers.
  5. May 2026
    Novel Booksellers Union — NBU-CWA
Stood with Memphis booksellers at Novel as they won their union election with a supermajority — proof that the next chapter of Southern labor is already being written.
  6. Always
Boards, honors & the next generation
Gail has served on numerous boards across the movement and the Memphis community — including the Workers Interfaith Network and the Memphis AFL-CIO Labor Council — and served as Labor Liaison to the United Way of the Mid-South on behalf of the Memphis CLC, connecting union families to community resources. She has received many awards for leadership, service, and excellence, and through it all she mentors the next generation of organizers as a big sister to the whole movement.

“They are risking their lives daily… To not compensate them for their sacrifices is unacceptable.”

— Gail Tyree, fighting for Memphis city employees as AFSCME 1733 Executive Director

Leading Local 1733 means carrying the legacy of 1968 — the sanitation strikers whose stand brought Dr. King to Memphis. Gail led that house through a pandemic, then took the fight to new frontiers with CWA.
