How to Join a Union: A Step-by-Step Guide

Ready to join a union? Here's what you need to know about the process.

Step 1: Research Unions in Your Industry

Different unions represent different types of workers:

  • SEIU:Healthcare, property services
  • UAW:Auto workers, manufacturing
  • IBEW:Electrical workers
  • Teamsters:Transportation, logistics
  • AFT/NEA:Teachers, education
  • UFCW:Retail, food workers

  • Step 2: Contact the Union

Reach out to the union that represents workers in your field:

  • Visit their website
  • Call their organizing department
  • Attend a community event
  • Talk to union members you know

  • Step 3: Talk to Your Coworkers

Building support among coworkers is essential:

  • Have one-on-one conversations
  • Discuss workplace concerns
  • Gauge interest in organizing
  • Keep conversations private initially

  • Step 4: The Organizing Process

If there's no union at your workplace:

    1. Form an organizing committee

    2. Collect authorization cards (signatures)

    3. File for an NLRB election

    4. Win the election (majority vote)

    5. Negotiate your first contract

Step 5: If a Union Already Exists

If your workplace already has a union:

    1. Contact the union representative

    2. Fill out a membership form

    3. Start paying dues

    4. Get involved in union activities
