What Is a Labor Union?

What Is a Labor Union?

A labor union is an organization of workers who have come together to achieve common goals, such as better wages, benefits, and working conditions.

How Unions Work

Unions operate on the principle of collective bargaining - the idea that workers have more power when they negotiate together rather than individually. When you join a union, you become part of a collective voice that can advocate for:

  • Fair Wages:Unions negotiate for competitive pay rates
  • Benefits:Healthcare, retirement plans, paid time off
  • Safe Working Conditions:Workplace safety standards
  • Job Security:Protection against unfair termination
  • Grievance Procedures:Fair processes for resolving disputes

  • The Power of Collective Action

One worker asking for a raise might be ignored. But when hundreds or thousands of workers stand together, employers must listen. This is the fundamental power of unions - transforming individual concerns into collective action.

    Your Right to Organize

Under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), most private-sector workers have the legal right to:

  • Form or join a union
  • Bargain collectively through representatives
  • Act together for mutual aid and protection
  • Choose not to engage in any of these activities

  • Understanding your rights is the first step toward making an informed decision about union membership.
