Whitehaven Youth Development

Where Development Becomes Progress

Whitehaven Youth Development equips Memphis youth and young adults ages 16–24 with technical skills, financial literacy, and an entrepreneurial mindset — hands-on, career-focused training taught by certified pros alongside near-peer mentors (ages 22–26) who keep it real. Their Three Pillars framework takes a young person from mastering the skills (trades, IT, cosmetology), to staying ahead (AI literacy, financial literacy, digital entrepreneurship), to the Launchpad: bridging training to real-world opportunity with professional development and mental health support. Right now they're working to build a dedicated youth building — a safe and productive place for Whitehaven's young people.

What WYD Does

Skilled Trades

HVAC, Electrical, Carpentry, and Plumbing — the exact crafts Memphis union apprenticeships are built on, taught hands-on by certified professionals.

STEM & Tech

AI, IT, automation, and robotics — future-proof skills that keep young workers ahead of the economy instead of chasing it.

Financial Literacy

Credit, budgeting, taxes, and investing — because a paycheck only builds a life when you know how to make it work for you.

Digital Skills

Content creation, marketing, and e-commerce for young people building their own brand or business online.

Beauty Business

Esthetics, cosmetology, and the path to salon ownership — licensed skills that become storefronts.

Incubation

Micro-business incubation, urban gardening, and mentorship — planting ownership early and walking with youth as it grows.

The Youth-to-Apprenticeship Pipeline

WYD's trades training — HVAC, electrical, carpentry, plumbing — lines up directly with Memphis union apprenticeship pathways: IBEW electricians, plumbers & pipefitters, carpenters, and building trades locals. A 17-year-old in a WYD workshop today can be a registered union apprentice earning while learning tomorrow, with journeyman wages, benefits, and a pension at the end of that road. Explore the Career Pathways page to see where their training leads.

A Community Partner of Labor Education

We met Whitehaven Youth Development at our CLC Labor Day picnic, and it was immediately clear we're building toward the same Memphis. They're working to raise a dedicated youth building — a safe and productive place for young people to learn a trade, build financial footing, and launch careers. Memphis labor believes in what they're doing: their classrooms feed our apprenticeships, and their success is our city's workforce. Support the build if you can.
