Built for the W.I.N. board and staff leadership — work through it on your own, then use the lesson prompts to run the sessions as a group.

Organizations are not all one thing. A nonprofit lifecycle usually runs from an idea, to a volunteer-driven startup, to a staffed and structured organization, and eventually to renewal or a decision to wind down. W.I.N. is in an unusual and powerful spot: founded in 2002, dormant for several years, and now relaunched with a board and no full staff. That is a startup with 20 years of history behind it.

Name the stage out loud at a board meeting, because almost every conflict in a relaunching organization comes from people operating in different stages at the same time. One member is still in emergency mode doing everything herself. Another is already talking about a strategic plan and an audit. Both are right for different stages — they just are not in the same one.

A working board does the work: answers the phone, runs the workshop, writes the newsletter. A governing board directs the work: sets priorities, approves the budget, hires and supervises one employee, and holds the mission. W.I.N. is currently a working board that intends to become a governing board. Everything in this training is about making that turn on purpose instead of by accident.

One honest caution from the field: the shift from volunteer-run to staff-run typically takes around three years to settle into a workable rhythm, and it is normal for it to feel worse before it feels better. Plan for a transition, not a switch.

Where this comes from: nonprofit lifecycle and working-board-to-governing-board practice (BoardSource and related governance guidance, including committee structure, board self-assessment and founder transitions); published guidance on moving from an all-volunteer to a staffed organization (multi-year revenue planning before hiring, one focused job description, written personnel policy, board supervising staff as a body); the Tennessee Bureau of Workers' Compensation (the five-employee threshold for non-construction employers, with no nonprofit exemption); the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Handbook for Employers (501(c)(3) unemployment liability at four or more employees in 20 different calendar weeks, and the reimbursing-employer election); and IRS guidance on exempt-organization employment taxes (501(c)(3) FUTA exemption, FICA and withholding obligations, W-4 and I-9). Thresholds, forms and deadlines change, and every organization's facts differ — confirm current requirements with the agencies and get employment-law, tax and insurance advice before hiring. This training is education, not legal, tax or HR advice.
