The good news: NC lets you register and vote on the same day during early voting. This page hands every union member the tools to use that power.

How to vote in North Carolina
The rules every NC voter must know — short, accurate, sourced from the North Carolina elections office. Bring this to your next union meeting.
Registration deadline
Register by 5pm on the 25th day before an election — for the November 3, 2026 general election that's October 9, 2026. Missed it? You can still register AND vote during early voting (see below).
Same-day registration during early voting
North Carolina allows SAME-DAY REGISTRATION — but only during the in-person early-voting period, NOT on Election Day. Bring proof of name and current address (license, government ID, utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck).
Voter ID — required
North Carolina requires a photo ID for in-person and absentee-by-mail voting. Accepted: NC driver's license or non-driver ID, US passport, approved student ID, government employee ID, military/veteran ID, or tribal ID. No ID? Use an ID exception form or vote provisionally.
Early voting
NC offers in-person EARLY VOTING with same-day registration. Any registered voter can early-vote at any early-voting site in their county — no excuse required.
Absentee (by-mail) ballot
Any registered NC voter may request an absentee-by-mail ballot — no excuse needed. A photo ID copy is required with your ballot. Request early and return on time.
Provisional ballot
If you're told you're not on the rolls — DO NOT LEAVE. Ask for a PROVISIONAL BALLOT and call 866-OUR-VOTE immediately for help.
