West Tennessee Legal Services

Justice shouldn't depend on your paycheck. Free civil legal help for limited-income West Tennesseans — for more than 40 years.

When a working family hits a legal problem — an eviction notice, a benefits denial, a protection order, a debt collector, an aging parent with no paperwork in place — the difference between drowning and standing is usually a lawyer nobody can afford. West Tennessee Legal Services exists to close that gap: free civil (non-criminal) legal help for limited-income West Tennesseans, from five offices including one right here in Memphis at 1407 Union Ave. Help is by appointment — call first, and be honest about your income; the service is free for those who qualify.

What WTLS Does

Housing & Everyday Civil Problems

Civil legal matters that hit working families hardest — housing and eviction issues, consumer and debt trouble, and public benefits problems. Call to ask if your case fits: (800) 372-8346.

Family Safety

Legal help for survivors of domestic violence — including orders of protection and the family-law steps that make leaving survivable.

Seniors & Caregivers

Powers of Attorney, Advance Directives, and help for seniors targeted by scams — the three conversations every caregiving family needs before a crisis, not after.

Medical-Legal Partnership

WTLS lawyers work alongside healthcare providers, because some 'health' problems — unsafe housing, denied benefits, unstable custody — have legal cures.

Know Your Rights

Community education, self-help resources, and videos on wtls.org — including senior scam awareness and estate-planning basics.

Five Offices, One Mission

Memphis (1407 Union Ave, Suite 1100, 901-471-8006), Jackson, Dyersburg, Huntingdon, and Selmer — covering West Tennessee's cities and rural counties alike.

How to Get Help

WTLS sees clients by appointment only — start with a call to (800) 372-8346 (toll-free) or the Memphis office at (901) 471-8006. Services are free for people who qualify based on income, and cover civil (non-criminal) matters. If WTLS can't take your case, ask them where to turn next — they know the whole legal-aid map. In an emergency involving violence, call 911 first.

A Community Partner of Labor Education

Labor Education features West Tennessee Legal Services as a community partner because legal problems are working-family problems: the eviction that follows a layoff, the benefits denial after an injury, the POA a caregiver never got signed. Union families — save the number before you need it: (800) 372-8346.
